anti-depresents arent the greatest thing not that ive ever used them but they can cause suicidal thoughts and that doesnt seem very good and please dont slit your wrists thats not good either ask your doctor about how your feeling or go to a counselor

Effexor XR has worked well with few side effects. It's honestly changed my life. The drawback with it being that it does have an afterlife, so you would not want to stop taking it without tapering off.

Been dealing with this for 15+ years now, and have tried other meds but have to say this has worked best for me. The
irrational anxiety issues have been almost eliminated…

    almost… ;)

P.S. After reading through the responses you're getting here, I made my suggestion based on the assumption that you've been diagnosed by a physician - not based on your having decided for yourself that you have this disorder. These meds are nothing to play with and not for use unless you have been to the doc. However, for those of you who have taken the anti-med stance, the day you find that you are unable to function, you might change your mind. I don't rule out learning to manage the illness or therapy, both can be very beneficial, I do rule out making uninformed decisions.

To those of us who have this disorder, medications are a god send.

Paxil is pretty good for depression with anxiety. Doesn't have too much in the way of side effects either. But of course don't ask us, ask your doctor. These meds are prescription only!
Meanwhile, exercise regularly and maintain a regular sleep schedule to improve the mental health.

anti depressants are just stupid! no one should take them! The way anti depressants work is they cover up the problem, they don't fix the problem. Thats why people freak out and do dumb shit on that stuff! Valium is really good for anxiety though.

seriously, ur mind. i don't believe in meds unless it is an actual case of chemical imbalance. see ur doctor. the commercials on the telly suggests that meds are not the answer, the users of such drugs still experiencing symptoms of depression. i feel it has to come from w/in. try forcing ur/self out of it, and once u get out, vow never to let ur/self to b in that position again. oh, and pray to GOD for the strength to pull u thru. He came thru for me. good luck.

I took cipramil for 4 years, it wasn't too bad.
Therapy helped me more though, as it got to the root of my depression.

For depression that has lasted some time, your best bet is a combination of therapy and anti depressants. IGNORE all the people on this site who have responded to your question by telling you not to take medication - half of them also admit to never having tried them, so they can't give you an informed answer.

For severe depression, and also anxiety, anti depressants can make a real difference. That said, it can be tricky finding the right one, and many people have to try a few.

You need to speak to a specialist; get your doctor to refer you. Nobody can tell you which specific medicine will work best for you - individual responses to all these medications vary tremendously, so to a certain extent, it's trial and error!

If you'd prefer to try more 'natural' methods, then try homeopathy or a course of chinese herbs. Be warned that the latter are very powerful and you must go to a reputable chain; in the UK, Herbal Inn seem good.

And never mix either homeopathy, chinese herbs, or St John's Wort with anti depressants.
