The Importance of Depression Support Groups

As many as 17 million people in the United States suffer from depression. Depression is a mental illness that can manifest itself in different ways. Generally, depression starts out as a minor case and it can get progressively worse over time if not treated. Serious cases of depression can lead to suicide attempts and even death.

Most people with depression will not admit it or get help for it because they are afraid of being categorized as mentally ill. They are often afraid people will think less of them if they admit that they are depressed. This is not true because depression is much better understood than it was years ago.

Depression, like any other mental illness, is something out of a person’s control just like any other disease. Depression is caused by a variety of factors including genetics, biological issues, environment and emotional issues.

Depression will not go away on its own so ignoring it and hoping to feel better just won’t work. The diagnosis needs to be made based on the symptoms you are experiencing and a treatment plan needs to be agreed upon by you and your doctor.

Many different treatments are used for depression. These can include prescription drugs and herbal remedies. Therapy is also a popular treatment that has seen a lot of success. Talking about the problems causing the depression and coming up with ways to deal with your feelings is very effective.

Another popular treatment is group therapy or support groups which allow you to talk about your problems with others going through the same thing. You can share ideas and learn from their experiences. You may be surprised how much this helps you deal with your own depression.

More and more doctors are recommending support groups for their patients with depression. It may be difficult at first for patients who are introverts to talk openly about their feelings and thoughts with strangers. Often, the supportive atmosphere makes even those who are shy feel more comfortable talking about their problems and concerns.

It helps to hear that others are going through the same things that you are experiencing. Feeling like you are not going through your depression alone and that you are not the only person who has the problems you have can be a big help. Talk to your doctor about a support group for your depression or for a loved one who has depression.
