What is Clinical Depression?

Clinical depression is an illness that should be taken seriously. It can change your thoughts, behavior and your moods. Anyone can suffer from clinical depression and it does not mean that you are a bad person. It just means that you have a medical condition that you need to get treated. People with clinical depression are usually unable to function normally in their daily life. They lose interest in things that they used to enjoy. They have feelings of sadness and emptiness that won’t go away. They don’t feel better and then feel bad again; they just feel bad all the time. Clinical depression won’t go away on its own.

People who have clinical depression feel its effects in all areas of their life every day. They are unable to think through things the same way the used to because their thoughts are all jumbled and confused. They don’t eat and sleep like they should so they are constantly out of sorts. They often find it hard to do schoolwork or to function in their office environment because of the confusion of their thoughts. They have a hard time in social situations and often avoid other people. They just do not feel like the same person they used to be.

There is nothing to be ashamed about if you have clinical depression. You can’t ignore it and think it is going to go away because it won’t. Clinical depression usually has to be treated over a period of months and even years. Without treatment, people may become so sad they attempt suicide. Often people do realize why they feel so sad all the time but there may be more going on then they realize. Clinical depression is a complicated disease that can be caused by genetic factors, your environment and many other factors.

One cause for clinical depression can be a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is also brought on sometimes by extreme stress. People who are under a lot of stress at home, work or at school often feel the effects of the stress both mentally and physically. Worrying about your finances all the time can also bring upon depression from the continued stress as can alcohol and drug abuse. If you suspect that a loved one is suffering from depression or you have been feeling sad and empty it is important to get a medical doctor involved right away.
